Wine maker notes

The 2003 vintage was consistently hot and dry, with no surprises and an optimal level of rain during the different seasons of the year. The vines grew with a low but steady level of water, allowing them to classically develop. A fine picking season in September lead to a harvest with above average quantity and excellent quality, mainly due to the consistency of the weather.” He added, “It was a good year especially for Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, allowing a strong maturation of these leading Douro varieties.

Historically, Cockburn’s has been more conservative than other producers in declaring vintages. Therefore, when Cockburn’s declares a wine worthy of a vintage designation, the wine must be great and not merely good.

Vintage Port is a blend of the finest wine lots from the finest quintas. Grapes from Cockburn’s vineyards in the Villariça Valley and from Cockburn’s prized Quinta dos Canais Estate provided the nucleus of the blend. Over the years, some 875 acres of Cockburn’s Estate vineyards have been planted to varietal blocks, a method relatively new to the Douro and pioneered by Cockburn’s.
